Why the People Around You Matter

The people around you shape you more than you think. The voices you listen to, the friendships you keep, and the people closest to your heart can influence your mindset, your choices, your peace, and your walk with God. Influence often happens quietly through daily conversations, shared habits, and repeated attitudes. Over time, the people around you can either draw you closer to God or slowly pull you away from Him. That is why who you keep close matters. Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Who you walk with affects where you are going. The right people are a gift. They encourage you, speak truth to you, pray for you, and help you stay grounded in your faith. They remind you who you are in Christ and make it easier to keep growing.
Healthy relationships bring peace, honesty, and strength. Do not forget, everyone should not have the same level of access to your heart. You can love people without letting them shape your identity. You can care about someone and still have boundaries. Jesus loved everyone, but He did not entrust Himself to everyone. There is wisdom in knowing the difference. The wrong people can leave you drained, distracted, and confused. The right people can sharpen you, strengthen you, and help you stay close to God. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
At the same time, isolation is not the answer. We all need a Godly community. We need people who will walk with us, encourage us, and remind us of truth when life feels heavy. So ask God for wisdom in your relationships. Ask Him to show you who is helping you grow, where boundaries are needed, and how to become the kind of person who brings peace and faith to others too.
The people around you matter and the kind of person you are becoming matters too.
“Walk with the wise and become wise.” - Proverbs 13:20
